Cathedral City, Riverside County
Cathedral City is named for Cathedral Canyon, in the mountains to the south, where a surveyor in the 1850s thought the rock formations resembled the interior of a great church. The town was subdivided in 1925 and incorporated in 1981. Its downtown along Highway 111 is built around a civic plaza with a large mosaic fountain where children play in summer.
